Steve Lacy Coming to the Armory 9/27

Steve Lacy is coming back to the Twin Cities, playing the Armory on Sunday, September 27th. This will be the bigest venue he has played in the area yet. Lacy is a singer, songwriter and personal friend of Tyler, The Creator. He first came on the scene as the guitarist for the alt R&B band The Internet. He officially joined the Grammy-nominated group in 2014, contributing significantly to their critically acclaimed third studio album, Ego Death (2015), which he co-produced while still a high school student. Known for his DIY approach, Lacy famously produced many of his early tracks and contributions to the band using just his iPhone, a guitar plug-in, and the GarageBand app, establishing a distinctively raw, genre-blending sound that merged neo-soul, funk, and indie rock. I got to see them in 2018 at the Varsity Theater.

Following his success with The Internet, Lacy successfully transitioned into a highly influential solo career while remaining a collaborative force in the music industry. He released his debut commercial project, Steve Lacy's Demo, in 2017, followed by his debut studio album, Apollo XXI, in 2019. His mainstream breakthrough arrived with his 2022 sophomore album, Gemini Rights, which featured the chart-topping, viral hit single "Bad Habit" and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album. I saw him perform this at the MYTH IN ‘22. Renowned for his eclectic style and musical versatility, Lacy has also produced and written for major artists across the industry, including Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, and Solange.
