The Many Deaths of Laila Star - Opera World Premiere at Ordway Music Theater Oct. 31-Nov. 8th
A brand new opera is hitting the stage at Ordway Theater through the MN Opera, starting with a Gala Performance on October 31st.
Based on the graphic novel by Ram V and Filipe Andrade, the story follows Death, except this time, humanity’s progress has changed her into something entirely different. On the cusp of discovering how to become immortal, making Death obsolete, Death is cast down to earth as a young woman in her 20s and decides to try tracking down the person destined to invent this immortality for humanity, and has to decide whether or not to let it happen.
Following the cyclical nature of death, we follow Laila in her adventures through lifetimes and the decisions she must make as she continues on her journey. The story takes us on pretty deep talks through philosophy, people and life’s purpose, memory, loss, and destiny.
This new telling of this story on stage has been brought to life with music by Kamala Sankaram and Libretto by Minita Gandhi and is shaped to be an incredibly vibrant and beautiful show- I have heard some wonderful things about the stage building for this show in particular. Sung in English and Hindi with English captions projected above the stage, I am also quite excited to hear a brand new opera and a different language sung on the stage. I’ll admit I have absolutely no experience with Hindi music, so I am genuinely quite excited!
Evening performances start at 7:30 p.m., and you can grab tickets here!
