Rich Brian Dances And Romances At Fillmore
Sometimes a dose of hip hop is exactly what you need. Been a bit since attending a cool kid show, and Rich Brian holds that contemporary high card. Having heard him on oodles of hot tracks where he shines effortlessly, knew I couldn’t miss my chance to see him in person.
Made my way downtown to hit up Inbound Brewing for a pre-show beer and to destroy some Doritos. Easy parking, buck an hour. Gotta love it. Always have a good time hanging out there before a concert. A few young kids were setting up for their own show on the stage, complete with 4 singers and brass accompaniment. Wish I could have stayed a little longer to hear more than their setup and mic checks. So much talent in the Twin Cities. Won’t stop saying it until it refuses to ring true. Jokes on you, this broken record will spin until the end of time.
Doors were at 7pm, got there a wee bit after that. About a third full at that time, was surprised at how diverse in ages the crowd was. Anticipating on being the old lady in the corner, aka in my 30s, was tickled when seeing a wider demographic than presumed. Of course your baggy pants bomber jacket-clad youths were there, but also tons of couples out on date night and even some *shock* older people than me. Got to chatting with some friendly staff, including a photographer that wasn’t actively shooting that night who had been on my list to meet IRL. Talked shop as we watched the audience slowly grow and gather in the front.
Since there was no opener, the audience was having a good time giggling and snapping selfies. Wanted to join the party, and since I had a bit of time, grabbed a beer. Not sure if they have increased their prices, but my one beer was OVER $15. The sticker shock is becoming nauseating. And when wanting to still tip because yeah, you should still tip your server no matter what the price, makes the purchase even more of a grumpy moment. Not a fun way to start a show, saw a lot of the folks getting drinks around me quite pretty stinky about the cost. I get it. Ya gotta make money. I get it. Maybe it’s worth it in the spreadsheets to charge that much for one drink due to the fact people don’t go to shows frequently and just throw up their hands in “Well, we are here, might as well.” I think it will be my last time ordering a beer at Fillmore because I can’t swallow the beer with out thinking every ounce is literally costing me a full American dollar. One sip = One buck = Too rich for my blood.
Finally the clock struck 8pm and Rich Brian time is here. Slinking out with a beam of light following him onto the stage, he appeared to screams and howls from the audience. The backdrop of the set was filled with security cameras on poles, making a bit of a statement on current surveillance and how much eyes must always be on him as a young rising star in the music industry. His flow is fast and warm, very witty and crisp. Bunch of very diehard fans clinging to the front row as to not be swept away from seeing every moment as close as possible. A few songs in, Rich Brian brought out a bass and started slapping away. Always nice when an artist pulls out an instrument for a little break down. It seems like as soon as he got going, it was already time to say goodbye. His songs are so catchy and really work well blending into each other. The hype is definitely real, and his fans would agree. So excited to see where he does from here, this may be the last time he is at a medium sized club. Arenas get ready for Rich Brian.
