Death Cab For Cutie Live in Minneapolis

Death Cab For Cutie opened their I Built You A Tower Tour on a sizzling Friday night at the Armory. With Jay Som getting the crowd settled into the night, I was surrounded by one of the most laid back, easy going crowds I’d experienced in a while. Jay Som gave their praises to Death Cab partway through their set, hyping the audience for the sound to come. Jay Som brought a classic LA sound to the armory, alternative rock with a dazzling ethereal spark to it. I had extra admiration for their drum skills as well. Their set was hazy — in a dreamy type of way — and the perfect transition into the blast of nostalgia that Death Cab would later deliver.

After the opening set, the orange dim lights on stage brought a feeling of nostalgia to the arena. Death Cab opened with a bang, “Riptides”, reminding the crowd after all these years they can still rock out and put on a strong performance. By the second song, the hit, “The New Year”, we were instantly transported back to the early 2000s. They shared music from their latest release, I Built You a Tower, which had their classic sound, authentic Death Cab throughout.

“I Will Follow You into the Dark”, typically dedicated to the lovers in the room, was performed in tribute style to the organizational efforts of the Twin Cities. Minnesota was cheered on for holding strong against fascism and the invasion of ICE back in early 2026. The emotional dedication and shoutout had the room stirring and then suddenly still as everybody swayed along to their biggest hit. Honestly I almost shed a tear at the reminder of the solidarity and strength within our community. The full hit of emotions was not on my bingo card for the night, but I think it added the perfect hint of intimacy to a venue that can feel so large and vast.

The visual efforts were a standout during the show, with a wide range of light designs and effects. The backdrop graphics gave the show the extra pop of color and excitement to make the stage come to life. The energy was bright yet grounded, and I felt surrounded by good company who sang along proudly. You could tell there was a range of people present, with diehard longtime fans drifting up front and in the back as well. Even kids who had joined their parents in the audience were dancing along to their undeniably catchy act and cheering loudly after each song.

The night left me feeling like I had come back from watching a favorite movie from my youth. Seeing a band live that has grown and evolved alongside with me, with their first release coming out a few years before I was born was once in a lifetime. They put on a four song encore, finishing up with “Transatlanticism”, leaving hearts full and looking for love if not yet found.
