Improv Meets Game Night in Battle of the Improv All-Stars
Attending the opening night of Battle of the Improv All-Stars 2026 was a lively and interactive experience that showcased both the unpredictability and charm of live improv. Produced by Hennepin Arts and performed by a rotating cast from Brave New Workshop, the show leans fully into a competitive concept: four performers enter, and by the end, one walks away as the audience-crowned improv champion.
What sets this show apart is how deeply it involves the audience. Rather than being passive viewers, we became active judges, ranking performers on our phones after each skit. This added a fun, game-like energy to the evening and made every scene feel like it had stakes. The host also kept the crowd engaged by pulling prompts directly from us. The host asked questions like “What were you scared of as a kid?” which quickly turned into the foundation for comedic, often risqué and absurd sketches.
As with any improv show, the results can vary from moment to moment. Some sketches landed harder than others, but overall, there were plenty of genuinely funny and memorable bits throughout the night. When the cast hit their stride, the spontaneity really paid off, delivering clever punchlines and unexpected, somewhat questionable twists that kept the audience laughing.
The competitive format gave the show a clear arc, with points accumulating over time and building toward a satisfying finale where one performer claimed the “Improv Star of the Night” title. It’s a simple concept, but it worked well to maintain momentum and keep the crowd invested.
Overall, Battle of the Improv All-Stars is a fun, energetic night out, especially for those who enjoy being part of the action. It embraces the hit-or-miss nature of improv while delivering enough strong moments to make it well worth the experience. You can find a weekend night all summer long here!
