LP Stuns And Wows At The Fillmore
The moment I first heard a song by LP, knew I have to heard her live. Seeing that there would be a show at The Fillmore with no opener, just her and her band, jumped at the chance. Not many performers can hold it down being the only group on a lineup.
LP proved that not only it can be done, but done in such a way it leaves you wanting for even more of her soulful siren songs.
Wanted a bit of a more relaxed way of getting to downtown, stuff at a bunch of venues including Target Field, wasn’t in the mood to pay $6 an hour or $40 for a garage spot. It has been a few years, well, maybe a decade, since I’ve taken the Light Rail. $4 gets you an all day pass these days. Not bad at all, parked for free at the Fort Snelling Park And Ride and made my way into downtown. Was clean and decently fast, plopped me right by Target Field and just had to walk down some stairs to my destination, The Fillmore. Brought my from-home-dinner to Inbound Brewery, which is only two blocks from the venue. Their beer is always solid, and typically have bands perform on their stage in the taproom. Lucky for me, tonight was one of those nights. Drank my beer and enjoyed a little music before my music.
The crowd was now boisterous and anticipatory. The spots open before now pleasantly filled out, plump with eager fans waiting for the show to start. Dripping in blue light, my eyes ran over the instruments on stage before the band came out. Plenty to love, I thought as the half-dozen guitars mics glittered in the azure glow. Lights faded out and everything was enveloped in black light and cheers from the audience. LP came out to cries of joy from her fans, responding to the praise and ‘I Love You’s echoing around her with a simple response, “Well, I love you too.”
Minneapolis is often given many accolades and thankyou speeches by artists these days, and Laura Pergolizzi is pleasantly in that bountiful crew. With almost endless writing credits under her illustriously talented belt, her own irresistible songs are just as potent as the ones written for international icons like Rihanna, Cher, and Céline Dion (to name a JUST a few.) Starting out in a leather jacket is always a cool move, LP appeared as if freshly leapt out of an 80s flick your local film bro implores you to digest via VHS tape. Holding it down throughout the almost two dozen songs, all the band members were so engaging. The sound was crisp and clear, being able to hear every trill from LP alongside sick solos and drum runs perfectly. Of all the tunes performed, I think “Shelly” was my personal favorite of the night.
Gosh, the vocals are just amazing in every song of LP’s. Some gold medal pipes, plus being able to whistle like that? Wowzers. Would love to see some crossover into metal or similar genre for Pergolizzi as a fun experiment. Devin Townsend comes to mind immediately. Don’t know if I could handle all that talent in one song, but want to try.
